FISH TALES Bally (USA)Démonté, à restaurerOui!

This whas the second game i've played a lot, I remember not really liking it at first, the balls drained fast and I really didn't know what the goal was. But afther a few hours of playing I've gotten really hooked to this game. the good: I loved the boat in the middle, loved to shoot lane after lane, after a while you can can get really handy at this. Ball locking mechanism for multiball is also great and the audio is fun to. Rock the boat! the bad Ok there wasn't something that I've found really bad, the only thing I wasn't convinced off was the art, It fitted the game nicely, but for my personal taste I like the more darker themes. Update: So I've had the chance to buy one of these for a good price. So here's my opinion that is not only based on memory's of it. I now really understand why I didn't like this game in the beginning. This pin needs a lot of getting used to the smaller flippers, ad to that the really claustrofobic playfield and you have a real ball drainer if you're not able to control the ball. So is this pinball still fun for me? I will answer positive to that question. It is still fun and I still like the features of this game, it really forces you to learn to control the ball otherwise will end up going SDTM. I'm going to adjust my provious scores though: - Art: +2 In real life it looked a lot better than I remembered. - Audio: stays the same music fits the theme nicely - Playfield: Stays the same, good and original playfield design with good integration of the ruleset ....

Scary stuff! The use of deep blood red and bright greens and blues really makes things pop. Honestly, demons and human sacrificing artwork really isn't my thing, but there is something about this that I really like. The backglass has so much detail, you can look at it for days and still notice new idiosyncrasies. Audio: For 1979, this was top-of-the-line, and for 20xx, it still holds up. Sure, his vocabulary is severely limited, but did you really expect a demonic monster to speak like a British aristocrat? No. I didn't think so. I think it works extremely well. The heartbeat kicks "you-know-what" and it really raises tension when things get down to the wire. The sound quality from this game just destroys the competition from Gottlieb and Bally, even though some sound clips sound like generic off the shelf Williams sounds. Playfield: Almost perfect. If it wasn't for the nasty unforgiving outholes, and weak old style flippers, this game would have a kick-butt playfield. The two drop target banks are equally difficult to hit, balancing play, and the 1-4 targets are difficult to make. The snake pit is a great and rewarding shot, and a lane back to the top A-B-C rollovers is key. Good all around balance and asymmetrical playfield keeps things interesting. Play: Snappy kickers and bumpers keeps things going at a great pace. It's a shame that Williams was still using the old EM style flippers on this game... this is the only major drawback and slows things down a bit. The outlanes are completely unforgiving which makes this game a bit of a drain monster. The snake pit is a great shot. The magnet really surprises new players, too. Occasionally, the ball will not catch on the magnet, and if you're lucky, the ball gets "slingshotted" from it, hurling it at the flippers at an alarming rate. Making the 1-4 targets is basically luck, as they are usually hit from rebounds from the slingshot kickers. Overall: This is a fantastic game. Try to see past the creepy artwork, and give it a play, it will surprise you. A pair of better flippers would make this game blindingly fast.
HIGH SPEED Williams (USA)Monté, doit être réparéOui!

Just got one and its an immediate hit. I'll have to see if it gets old but so far things look good and so the marks reflect that. The sound and light show are great fun and I think it would be an excellent choice as a "one only" pin in a games room for the occasional pinball player. The more I think about it, The more I think this was a very clever theme for its age. In those more innocent times of the 80s, you could say this was a precursor to the gameplay in "Grand Theft Auto". Its the same idea of being outside the law, but HS implements the idea more physically via its speech and light show. That makes for a pleasant change today and not only that, the concept is without violence and this adds to its charm for me. i.e. you're being chased and you escape! *update* After a few months, its still a great solid game for me. I can see why so many of them were played to wood in the arcades and it deserves its "classic" status. I've played its sequal "Getaway" and I rate the original better. Why? Getaway adds DMD fun but the "play atmosphere" isn't the same for me.
STAR TREK Data East (USA)Monté, doit être réparéOui!

Overview: The easiest game I ever loved. This is a great addition to a game room; and a perfect game if you have non-pinball visitors: multiple player feature is great for parties, easy to understand goals is great for non-pinball first-timers, shorter game times feels more satisfying with the achievable goals, the bumpers actually add to the game play!, lots of cool lights and colors make it great to look at. Ironically, this in not my favorite game in my mix, but it gets the most play (by visitors, and by me). That says something. This would make a great first home use machine...or a great addition to help round out a collection. OH! and its Star Trek! Worth all the money. Here are my notes: 1. Not a deep rule set game. It defiantly has rules and goals, but it can get repetitive. The key to this game is to challenge yourself to completing the game elements like: get 10x bonus filled, fill the phaser banks 100%, focus on getting a higher score than last time. 2. Don't expect to get a high score by randomly bouncing the ball around and hitting things. This game sharpens your control over the ball. I've gotten so much better at pinball by playing this game. It allows you to fine tune your flipper skill. 3. The scoop returns the ball occasionally right-down-the-middle! But not enough to murder the game. 4. Beautiful Beautiful Artwork and colors and lights. Great visual art, they did not skimp out on lights or artwork. Everywhere you look has a little detail in it. It looks like the design team put themselves in star trek uniforms in the upper play field plastic kinda out of sight a bit - funny. 5. Targets are mid field/left & right/ mid playfield; the ball can build up a lot of speed when it bounces back toward you, causing occasional jump balls. The right outlane is my enemy and must be set in the most conservative setting to be managable. I set the left outlane to an easy kickback setting. 6. The transporter effect on the backglass is so unique and wonderful! I have never had a problem with the transporter mechanism. Works 100% all the time for me. 7. Hit each ramp 5 times to light shields for a ball save award. Ramps are very nice, and seem to be quite liberal, if the ball makes it up half way, it usually goes the entire way. I've seen many of these machines on location and have never seen the ramp chase lights work. Poor design from the factory. Don't worry about it. You don't even know you are missing anything. 8. While I believe in having actual plungers on a pinball machine, I suppose the big red button fits the theme well enough to be okay with it. The button "plunger" is used for the game mode to fire a laser at the enemy ship for points on the animated dmd. 9. There are really no super interesting game features other then the moving target and the transporter effect on the backglass. It is exciting when you activate the transporter and get a jackpot. The video mode gets very repetitive and has a easy pattern to hit the ships. Mostly lame. 10. The lights look great, especially at night. 11. Deep cleaning is not horrible but not so easy either, as the entire ramp section is one big unit and has to be removed. Pretty much everything has to come off, so make time for the project. 12. If you are only collecting this game for the Star Trek theme, then you won't be disappointed. The theme is the best part of this game.
